Solo Games That Still Surprise You

I keep coming back to systems for solo play that already do half the work. GURPS gives me advantages and disadvantages that force decisions I would not make on my own. Worlds Without Number gives me a book full of tables, so I am not staring at a blank hex map. Free League’s games—Dragonbane, Forbidden Lands—come with solo rules and monster charts that do not need a referee. Genesys puts the oracle in the dice. I do not need another system. I need the ones I already own to stop feeling familiar.

The problem is not that these games are bad for solo. The problem is that after a few sessions I start answering the questions before the tables do. I know which result on the WWN adventure generator will give me a fight I can win. I know which GURPS disadvantage I can ignore in this scene because the story is “supposed” to move forward. The game stops surprising me, and then I stop caring.

One fix is to steal the wrong tables. WWN’s faction and adventure charts work fine in a GURPS cops game if you ignore the fantasy words and keep the structure. A “rival organization” becomes another precinct or a crew moving in on the same territory. A “magical complication” becomes a witness who suddenly has a lawyer, or a report that does not match the body. Dragonbane’s random monster attacks work the same way in a modern game if you treat the chart as “what the opposition does next” instead of “what the beast does.” You are not running two systems. You are using one book’s randomizers on another book’s characters.

Another fix is to make the disadvantages expensive. In GURPS, I already give characters self-control rolls and mental weaknesses. The creative part is treating those rolls as the scene, not as a side note. If a character has a gambling problem, the next time the group needs information, I don't roll “Streetwise.” I roll the self-control first. Failure means the contact wants a marker, or the character already spent the money meant to buy the tip. The disadvantage is not flavor. It is the reason the plan changes. Same thing with the “fired at a kid playing laser tag” example. Next time the character has an uncertain target, the roll isn't optional. If it fails, the shot doesn't happen, or it hits the wrong thing, and the rest of the session deals with it.

I also keep a short list of things I am not allowed to hand myself. No new ally in the same session as a major recovery. No magic item that solves the current problem. No clean victory right after a clean victory. This is the same idea as the balance needle, just written as a ban list instead of a number. When the oracle, AI, or random table offers one of those things, I take the next result down, or I flip it to a complication. The table still decides. I just refuse the version that makes the rest of the night weightless.

The Free League solo rules work for the same reason the WWN tables do: they generate the next problem before I decide what the problem should be. When I start ignoring those results because I already know how the hex crawl “should” go, I switch books for a night. Run the Forbidden Lands travel procedure in a Dragonbane dungeon, or use the WWN site generator for a modern ruin and play it with GURPS. The mismatch is the point. The procedure doesn't know it is in the wrong genre, so it keeps handing me details I wouldn't have invented.

None of this requires a new game. It requires treating the tools that already exist- disadvantages, random charts, solo procedures, even the narrative dice- as things that can overrule me. The moment I start editing the results to keep the story moving the way I expected, the session is over. I might as well be reading a book I already finished.

The games that work for me solo are the ones that still have a chance of saying no. Everything else is just me talking to myself with extra steps.
